Indian Supreme Court orders to release Dr Khalil Chishti
The Indian Supreme Court has freed the 80 years old Pakistani microbiologist Dr Khalil Chishti. He has spent 20 years in jail or detention in India for murder. The Indian Court has discharged the murder case against him by saying that he has already suffered a lot for his conviction of “causing voluntary harm”.
Now he is returning to Pakistan freely.
Earlier, the Indian Supreme Court had allowed Dr Chishti to return to Pakistan on “compassionate grounds” for six months and returned to
India in November with his wife Mehrunissa and son Tariq.
Chishti was implicated in a murder case when he had travelled to India in 1992 to see his ailing mother. Chishti has always denied the charges.
After an 18-year-long trial, the octogenarian professor was awarded life imprisonment by a Rajasthan court and sent to the Ajmer jail in January last year. The time he spent in jail while being tried was not considered to be included in his sentencing. More
