Yale University examined 67 teenagers smokers and found that they had difficulty in focusing and interpreting sounds when there was a distraction.
The team further added that the scans showed exposure changed the brain’s white matter, responsible for transmitting messages.
The researchers consider that the production of white matter in excess is due to nicotine stimulating a chemical compound called acetylcholine.
